Mylène Farmer: Diabolique mon ange (Timeless 2013)

Mylène Farmer has released the track Diabolique mon ange as a single to promote her new live album
Timeless 2013.

The track comes ahead of the new album which is due to be released on Monday December the ninth.

The song originally featured in its studio version on her 2010 Bleu Noir album, which preceded her Monkey Me album that came out in 2012.

A few (very short) teaser clips have been released ahead of the new album, which chronicles her tour this year that kicked off with ten nights at Bercy in Paris in September.

The live album was recorded at her shows at the Halle Tony Garnier in Lyon on September  24, 25, 27 and  28.

A DVD of the tour is likley to emerge next year, and she still has a couple of shows before the tour ends on December 6 in Nice.

Mylène Farmer: Monkey Me

A new video has emerged for the track Monkey Me, the new single by Mylène Farmer.

The song is the title track from Farmer's most recent studio album , the release coincides with her Timeless 2013 tour, that has so far seen her play a lengthy engagement in Paris, and is currently touring around France.

The video is by Eric Delmotte and Luc Froehlicher, Froehlicher having worked on visual aspects of Farmer's tour. It had been expected that there wouldn't be a video released to accompany the song, but

Mylène herself doesn't feature in the video, perhaps she's been a little busy putting the tour together to get involved.

The single gets a physical release at the beginning of next week, it will be interesting to see if it gives her another number one single to add to her growing collection.

The cover for the single was chosen from potential designs submitted by fans in a competition, with Mylène selecting her favourite to appear on the cover.

It's the third track to be released as a single from the album which emerged last year, following À L'Ombre and Je te dis tout.

Farmer's tour continues, Monkey Me being one of the tracks featured in her set, and some of her earlier albums get a special release as picture discs next week, while there's speculation that a recording of one of her shows might be releases as a live DVD before the end of the year.

Mylène Farmer: 13 French number one songs

This weekend sees Mylène Farmer begin her much anticipated Timeless  tour.

Since her career began in 1984, she's become unquestionably France's most significant contemporary female artist.

She's repeatedly broken sales records and  one measure of her status is the fact that Farmer holds the record for the number of number one hits in France.

She already had enjoyed success with Maman a tort, Libertine , Tristana and Sans contrefaçon when the track Pourvu qu'elles soient douces from her 1988 second album Ainsi soit je... became her first number one.

The epic costume drama video raised possibility that the music video clip could be something more than just a vehicle to promote a song. At the time of its release it was said to be the most expensive music video that had been made.

She would reach number one again in 1991 with a track from her third  studio album. Désenchantée came from her album L'Autre... and firmly established Farmer as a star.

The song topped the French chart for more than two months, and is regarded as a key song in Farmer's discography. Again, the video played a significant part in its success, another extended epic, this time  illustrating Farmer's involvement in a fight for freedom in an unspecified ghetto or gulag.

There would be more hit singles following Désenchantée including Regrets, Je t'aime mélancolie and Que mon cœur lâche, and she reached number one again in 1993 with XXL, the lead track from her fourth album, Anamorphosée.

It would be a few years until she topped the charts again, but in the meantime she would have top three hits with songs like L'Âme-stram-gram, Innamoramento, Les Mots, Fuck them all and Peut-être toi, along with many others that made the top ten.

In 2006 the song Slipping Away (Crier la vie), a collaboration with Moby that apepared on the French edition of his Best of collection gave her a fourth number one. It would notbe the last time Farmer would work with Moby.

Two years would pass until the track Dégénération , the lead track from her 2008  Point de Suture album reached the top of the charts. It would be the first of eight single releases in a row that would get to number one.

Dégénération was followed by Appelle mon numéro, another track from her seventh studio album.

In 2009, the album continued to produce number one singles, with  the ballad Si j'avais au moins... reaching the top of the charts.

Her next single C'est dans l'air - a  more electronic dance number - did not, like the three predecessors, go straight to number one on its week of release, but it did get there the following week.

The fifth single from Point de Suture, Sextonic, also made it to number one despite selling fewer copies than the previous singles from the album. It did, however, mark a rare occasion where every single from an album reached number one.

Farmer followed up  Point de Suture with the collection Bleu Noir, the single Oui mais... non coming out ahead of the album. The single was released in 2010, and reached number one with total sales of around 140,000, almost ten times the sales of her preceding single.

The title track of the album was subsequently released as a single in 2011 following the release of her eighth studio album in December 2010. The song again saw her working with Moby.

A third single from the album was then released, Lonely Lisa making it a second album in a row to see every single reach number one.  It was to be her eighth number one in a row.

The single Du temps from her Best of 2001-2011 greatest hits collection broke her run of number one singles, but the release of the song À l'ombre ahead of the 2012 Monkey Me studio album gave her a 13th number one.

Farmer's career has seen changes to her style over the decades, but she's consistently remained one of France's most significant musical artists.

She will no doubt continue to change the shape of her music and influence others, and while what's ahead may not be certain, what's likely is that there will be more number one songs to come.

Mylène Farmer: Je te dis Tout video

The new Mylène Farmer video has surfaced, just a short time after it was confirmed that Je te dis Tout was to be released as the second single from her Monkey Me album that was released in December.

Her previous single À l'ombre gave her another number one hit in France, it would be no surprise if this song continued to add to her score of 13 number one singles in France since 1988's Pourvu qu'elles soient douces, nine of these since 2008.

With Mylène Farmer, videos have always been almost as important as the songs themselves, and this one continues that tradition.

It's a great song and a memorable video, and I reckon that a video for a ballad is a more difficult proposition than one for a dance track.

For videos for songs like this, the cinematography matter more than the choreography, and there's more space for imagination in how a song can be portrayed.

More tasteful work here, and I reckon it will be a while until wes see Lady Gaga or Madonna come up with anything like this.

Mylène Farmer: Je te dis tous

A new single release Mylène Farmer always merits a mention, with 2013 shaping up to be a major year for France's number one female star.

The track Je te dis tous comes from her album monkey Me, released in the closing months of last year, which came out following the single À l'ombre.

To these ears anyway, Je te dis tous is a better track than À l'ombre, and it has an epic feel that really suits her.

A video for the song has been shot and will hopefully appear soon.

Her Timeless tour gets under way in September, with 200,000 tickets selling in a matter of hours it's probably the most anticipated tour in France for years.

Meanwhile, Mylène appears at the NRJ Music Awards this weekend, and will be performing Je te dis tous. She's performed at the ceremony the last two years, with the songs Oui...main non and Du temps, both upbeat numbers quite different from a ballad like Je te dis tous.

No award nominations for Mylène this year though, on account of the album being released too late for inclusion in this year's shortlists.

It still looks like 2013 will be a memorable year for both Mylène and her fans.

Mylène Farmer: À l'ombre video

It's taken a few weeks for the video for the new Mylène Farmer single to emerge, but it's been worth the wait.

For an artist like Mylène Farmer, the video is always a big deal. Much of her reputation came from her pioneering work in the medium in her early years, and this video, like those, was directed by long-term collaborator Laurent Boutonnat.

The song emerged at the end of October, and its already crept into the top five in France, and I'm sure that with the video raising its profile along with the release of her long awaited album finally out, there's more than a chance that it will add to her score of 12 number one singles in France.

Her new album Monkey me is released this week, more on that later on the blog this week.

Her Timeless tour dates next year sees her playing to over 300,000 fans, with shows in Moscow and Saint Petersburg setting a record for ticket sales in Russia. Some more dates, the final ones to be added, have been confirmed for September, October and December 2013.

Mylène Farmer: Monkey Me album and tour

Details have emerged about the new Mylène Farmer release, the album Monkey Me due to come out on December 3.

There are few singers who have attracted such a mythical status over their career. Farmer isn't, as some would have it, simply a "French Madonna". I've said it before here, she's as much Kate Bush and Lady Gaga as well, to view her in simple terms for an English language audience.

The announcement of a new album, and a tour, was in itself an event on the scale of the release of the latest Apple product.

A small selection of around 50 journalists in France were sent details in a customised brass USB stick annoucing the album and a tour entitled Timeless to take place in autumn 2013.

The album will feature 12 tracks, all by Mylène and long-term collaborator Laurent Boutonnat, and all the songs on the new album, which was recorded this summer, are in French and a mix of uptempo tracks and ballads.

Her last full release was the album Bleu Noir in 2010 and her last tour was in 2009, so the appetite for the new shows is immense.

A single is to be released at the end of October, although the details of the title have not been confirmed.

The tour starts at Bercy on September 7 2013, and tickets go on sale on October 4.
