French journalists kidnapped in Syria #6fevrier

Today sees attention in France being given to four journalists being held in Syria, eight months after the first two were taken hostage during the conflict.

Journalist  Didier François who works for Europe 1 and photographer Edouard Elias were taken prisoner on June 6 2013,  journalist Nicolas Hénin who works for Le Point and  photographer Pierre Torres who works for Arte were taken on June 22 2013.

France télévisions is dedicating a special broadcast this evening to the campaigns to free the four journalists being held.

Their kidnap comes amid a situation that sees 22 western journalists held in Syria, and at least 20 others from Syria, Lebanon and Turkey. Others being held include aid workers, medics and an Italian priest.

This situation is by any measure unacceptable.

A concert supporting the four hostages was held in Paris in November last year, and I thought the interpretation by singer Grégoire of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights deserved a mention here.
