Julia: S.E.X.T.O.

A debut single by French teenage singer Julia, a graduate of The Voice Kids TV show, written by Mylène Farmer and her collaborator Laurent Boutonnat.

Farmer and Boutonnat were impressed by performances the youngster had posted on YouTube and decided to work with her, writing her debut single and overseeing the launch of her career.

Of course, the song's theme is meant to be a bit edgy and controversial for a 16-year-old female artist. All the more likely to get some attention. Maybe it's an echo of a modus operandi established by Serge Gainsbourg in the 60s although if you ask me old Serge had a bit more subtlety, wit and humour about his work.

If it all seems a bit familiar, maybe it is. Julia follows Alizée as a younger representative representative of Mylène Farmer and Laurent Boutonnat. Alizée also featured in a French TV show for kids - Graines de Star - in 1999 before releasing the similarly "edgy" single Moi...Lolita single in 2000.

It was a massive success, as was her debut album Gourmandises which sold over four million copies.
Farmer and Boutonnat wrote the songs on that dabut album and its follow up, overseeing the early years of her career until she was an established name in France and beyond.

Alizée's career continues, with her most recent album being 2014's Blonde. She's also a major star in France due to her appearances on France's Danse avec les stars TV show.

Given the immense popularity of the Farmer and Boutonnat brand in France, and their previous success with Alizée, they've not strayed too far from a successful formula.

As it coincides with the return of Mylène, Julia's debut release has emerged at just the right time to attract a huge amount of attention. Farmer and Boutonnat certainly know what they're doing.

Mylène Farmer: N'oublie pas (video)

The video has finally arrived for the new Mylène Farmer single N'oublie pas.

The song is a duet with American singer LP who also features on the video. The clip, directed by long-time Mylène collaborator Laurent Boutonnat, was shot in Iceland, an appropriately dramatic landscape.

Boutonnat has, of course, worked on some of Mylène's most memorable videos since the beginning of her career and has also written some of her most loved songs.

Having an artist like LP alongside Mylène probably won't do her any harm in the anglophone market. In recent years she's worked with Sting, Seal and Moby, and while she's probably France's biggest musical performer, she remains somewhat less of a household name in the UK and USA.

N'oublie pas follows the release of the single Rolling Stone earlier this year, a collaboration with French DJ Feder which gave her the latest in a long catalogue of number one singles in France.

Farmer has a new album scheduled for later in the year, a follow up to 2015's Interstellaires, expected to be entitled Désobéissance.

While nothing has been confirmed as yet, the possibility of a tour next year has already got her fans in a frenzy.

Mylène Farmer: N'oublie pas

After hinting during her performance on TF1's Chanson de l'année show earlier this month,  Mylène Farmer's new single is indeed called N'oublie pas and is a duet with American singer LP.

The release, which was confirmed earlier this week, is a follow-up to her Rolling Stone single which came out in January.

Rolling Stone, produced by French DJ Feder, reached number one in the French charts. This was the 17th time Mylène reached number one in the French charts with a single since she reached the top of the charts with Libertine in 1986.  Eight singles in a row reached number one between 2008 and 2011.

A video clip, which was filmed in Iceland, was directed by long-time Mylène collaborator  Laurent Boutonnat who not only wrote many of her songs but has also been behind some of Mylène's most memorable promo videos since her Maman a tort debut in 1984. The prospect of the pair working together on a new video will have Mylène's many fans excited.

Farmer has a new album scheduled for later in the year, a follow up to 2015's Interstellaires that looks like it will be called Désobéissance.

With 2018 already seeing Farmer starring in a new film (Ghostland) and a number one single, the rest of the year will be interesting. Will there be a tour in 2019? Will she have another number one single? We'll have to wait and see.

Mylène Farmer: À l'ombre video

It's taken a few weeks for the video for the new Mylène Farmer single to emerge, but it's been worth the wait.

For an artist like Mylène Farmer, the video is always a big deal. Much of her reputation came from her pioneering work in the medium in her early years, and this video, like those, was directed by long-term collaborator Laurent Boutonnat.

The song emerged at the end of October, and its already crept into the top five in France, and I'm sure that with the video raising its profile along with the release of her long awaited album finally out, there's more than a chance that it will add to her score of 12 number one singles in France.

Her new album Monkey me is released this week, more on that later on the blog this week.

Her Timeless tour dates next year sees her playing to over 300,000 fans, with shows in Moscow and Saint Petersburg setting a record for ticket sales in Russia. Some more dates, the final ones to be added, have been confirmed for September, October and December 2013.

Mylène Farmer: Monkey Me album and tour

Details have emerged about the new Mylène Farmer release, the album Monkey Me due to come out on December 3.

There are few singers who have attracted such a mythical status over their career. Farmer isn't, as some would have it, simply a "French Madonna". I've said it before here, she's as much Kate Bush and Lady Gaga as well, to view her in simple terms for an English language audience.

The announcement of a new album, and a tour, was in itself an event on the scale of the release of the latest Apple product.

A small selection of around 50 journalists in France were sent details in a customised brass USB stick annoucing the album and a tour entitled Timeless to take place in autumn 2013.

The album will feature 12 tracks, all by Mylène and long-term collaborator Laurent Boutonnat, and all the songs on the new album, which was recorded this summer, are in French and a mix of uptempo tracks and ballads.

Her last full release was the album Bleu Noir in 2010 and her last tour was in 2009, so the appetite for the new shows is immense.

A single is to be released at the end of October, although the details of the title have not been confirmed.

The tour starts at Bercy on September 7 2013, and tickets go on sale on October 4.

Mylène Farmer - Du Temps remixes

Mylène Farmer's most recent track Du Temps has surfaced as an extended CD with remix versions of the song.

The song was an unreleased track included on her 'best of' 2001-2011 album which came out in December, and marks her working again with long-term collaborator Laurant Boutonnant.

Despite every single from Farmer's last album Bleu Noir making the number one spot in the French charts, Du Temps only made it as high as number eight. The 'best of' album made number one in the sales of compilations, number eight in the regular chart.

The new CD features five versions of the song, the original and four different versions.

1. Du Temps 3:38
2. Du Temps (Tomer G Reloaded Club Mix) 6:34
3. Du Temps (Mico C Club Remix) 5:14
4. Du Temps (Mico C Radio Edit) 3:36
5. Du Temps (Version Instrumentale) 3:35

Mylène Farmer: Du Temps

A new single from Mylene Farmer and a new 'best of' CD have just been released,

The album, entitled 2001-2011 is her second compilation, her previous Les Mots (released in 2001) having sold over 1.5 million copies.

The album includes two previously unreleased tracks, one being her new single Du Temps.

The song is very much an electro-pop work, and sees her working with long-time collaborator Laurent Boutonnat. Farmer's last release, her eighth album Bleu Noir was her first without Boutinnat's input, and saw her working with Moby RedOne and Darius Keeler.

I'm not sure whether the song is more recent that Bleu Noir. It may be the song was recorded before Bleu Noir and is only now being released, or possibly that they are again working together. Boutonnat certainly directed the video, so it may well mark a return to working with her long-running collaborator.

While I'm sure fans will be awaiting new material with impatience, and greatest hits albums can be seen as a quick cash-grab from an artist, there are plenty of people I'm sure who first became aware of Farmer on the back of the success of Bleu Noir and who will welcome the opportunity to catch up on her previous work, and with ten years between this one and her previous collection, it's certainly not been hurried.

With three tracks from Bleu Noir reaching number one in France, farmer holds the record for number ones in the country. Will Du Temps make it 13?
