Orelsan: Live at the Jazz Café, London

A heads up for French rapper Orelsan who plays in London later this week.

The rapper, known to his family as Aurélien Cotentin, has released two albums, Perdu d'avance in 2009 and Le Chant des Sirènes in 2011.

Le Chant des sirènes was a platinum selling album, with over 100,000 copies sold since its release.

Last year he won two Victoires de la Musique awards for rap/urban album of the year and for breakthrough group or artist (public choice). this year he was nominated for the best male artist of the year.

As a white male rapper, he's been described as the French Eminem. Probably by anglophone journalists who don't know any French rappers or any other white rappers.

As with many rappers, his success has not been without controversy, with some of his lyrics held up as mysogenistic and inciting violence, others claiming that criticism of his work and cancellation of his shows as a consequence of his lyrics amounted to censorship.

Orelsan plays the Jazz Café tomorrow, Feb 19.
