Victoires de la Musique: The 2023 nominees

The nominations for this year's Victoires de la Musique awards have been confirmed, with some of the 

biggest names in French music on this year's shortlist.

There are four nominations for Stromae;  best male artist, best album, best original song and best audiovisual creation, and three nominations for Orelsan; best original song, concert of the year and best audiovisual creation

For the best male artist, Stromae is up against Bigflo and Oli and Grand Corps Malade, Ben Mazué and Gaël Faye. The best female artist will be either Angèle, Izïa or Pomme.

The four competing for the breakthrough male artist are Pierre de Maere, Jacques, Lujipeka and Tiakola, while the breakthrough female artist is between Mentissa, November ultra and Emma Peters.

Album of the year features three female artists out of the five nominees, Jeanne Added's By Your Side, Pomme's Consolation, Angèle's Nonante-cinq as well as Stromae's Multitude and Éphémère by Grand Corps Malade, Ben Mazué and Gaël Faye.

Five songs are nominated for the best original song, Clara Luciani's Coeur, Juliette Armanet's Flamme, Stromae's L'enfer, Orelsan's La Quête and Pierre de Maere's Un jour je marierai un Ange.

Concert of the year again includes a female-dominated shortlist, featuring Juliette Armanet, Clara Luciani and Orelsan. 

The shortlist for audiovisual creation of the year features Bigflo and Oli feat. Julien Doré (Coup de Vieux), Stromae (Fils de joie) and Orelsan (La Quête ). Meanwhile, Angèle and Ninho are competing for the most streamed album of the year.

The 38th annual Victoires de la Musique Awards ceremony takes place on Friday, February 10 at La Seine Musicale and is broadcast on France 2 and France Inter.

Friday February 12 sees this year's Victoires de la Musique award take place in Paris. It's the 31st time the event's been held, the ceremony being the French equivalent of the Grammy Awards in the US or the Brit Awards in the UK.

It's prestigious and a big spectacle, and while it's easy to criticise the relevance of awards in a field like music, there's little doubt that the expose an act can get as a result of a win can establish careers.

Like last year, I thought I'd take a look at the short list, and throw in my predictions. Last year I got some right, some wrong, but it was fun to take an in-depth look at the event.

Male Artist

My money here would be on Dominique A on the strength of his Éléor album. He's an artist who has created some great work over the years, his most recent album certainly is as good as anything he's previously done.

I think Zaz might pick this one up. Another great year for a singer who has become for many an ambassador for French music internationally and her Paris album released at the end of 2014 took on a different meaning in the light of events in the French capital in 2015.

Breakthrough album

Louane - Chambre 12

My personal favourite here would be Jeanne Added, but I think this award will go to Louane, a pop star of the truest sense, going from winner of The Voice to top of the charts via a César award.

While all worthy winners, surely this must go to Feu!Chatterton, worthy winners of this blog's best release of last year award.

Chanson album

Difficult one to call, with three releases that are all strong and deserving of the award. I'd be surprised of Johnny goes home empty handed, but I do think this might go to Frero Delavega.

Rock album

Rover: Let it Glow

Again, another difficult selection here. Lou Doillon's won before, but it would not surprise me if she picked up this award.

Urban album 

Booba: D.U.C.
Nekfeu: Feu
Youssoupha: NGRTD

Some hugely popular acts, arguably at the top of their game. My money would go on Nekfeu, the youngest and least established of the three on the list.

World Music album

Tiken Jah Fakoly: Racines
Ballaké Sissoko and Vincent Segal: Musique de nuit

Hindi Zahra: Homeland

A fine release by Hindi Zahra, which should hopefully see her pick up the award.

Electronic or Dance music album 

St Germain: St Germain
The Avener: The Wanderings of the Avener
The Shoes: Chemicals

Some strong releases in this category, but my suspicions are The Avener will get this one, his work meeting with massive commercial and critical success since the album came out.

Johnny Hallyday: De l'amour

Maitre Gims: Sapés comme Jamais
Nekfeu: On Verra

Some very varied work here, but I reckon this might be one for Johnny Hallyday. A surprisingly sprightly number from the veteran performer that took a lot of people, incuding Johnny's fans, by surprise.

Another category where it would be no surprise whoever won, but I think the sheer likeable qualities of Louis, Matthieu, Joseph and Anna Chedid will win the day for them.

Not a bad one on this list, all favourites of this blog. Christine won massively last year, Stromae is also no stranger to the awards. The Do picked up best rock album last year. But judging on the clip alone, it would have to be Stromae that gets my vote.

Vive le Roq Album of the year 2015

A look at French music in 2015 cannot fail to take into account the tragedies that unfold in Paris. Discussing the events in the context of a music blog seems both inapproriate but unavoidable, such was the shadow cast.

To ignore it would be grossly insensitive, but to mention it a crass appropriation of other people's sorrow.

But I've always been interested in French music, and that is what will focus on here. I'll leave the geopolitics to others, but the events that unfolded this year will be felt in the French music world for years to come.

In terms of what else happened in music in 2015,  there might not have been a massive international breakthrough like Daft Punk, but the acts at the current forefront of the French scene have continued to release strong new material.

Christine and the Queens released their debut album in the USA with new songs including the wonderful Jonathan.



Stromae's Quand c'est was one of the year's most remarkable videos, as the success of his 2013 Racine Carrée collection saw him embark on adventures in North America and Africa.



Respectable releases too from stars of previous generations, with new material from Mylene Farmer, Johnny Hallyday and Jean-Michel Jarre all showing that established artists can still have something to offer.





But focussing on five of the best releases of 2015 brings some other acts to mind.

Fauve's Vieux Frères, Partie 2 was the release that saw the act fully deliver on the promise of their debut. As good as that release was, it never quite hit the spot for me as much as I felt it should. No reservations about its follow up whatsoever, and with Les Hautes Lumières  simply one of the best French language songs of recent years.



 A more electronic proposition came from Rone, with the album Creatures. It's a mature and confident album, taking modern electronic music somewhere where it is more cerebral, but remains accessible at the same time.


 Who would have expected an album that saw Grand Corps Malade with not only  Charles Aznavour and also include the return or Renaud? GCM's Il nous restera ça album took seemingly disparate elements in its stride,  and raised the bar when it comes to spoken word performance.



 An album I thouroughly enjoyed was the debut by Blind Digital Citizen, Premières vies, which came out in March. It continues the trend of France producing wonderful genre defying modern rock acts, somewhere between rock, electro and psychedelic with a nod to chanson.



But if an album of the year must be chosen, unquestionably it came from Feu! Chatterton in the form of their Ici le jour (a tout enseveli) collection.

The Paris-based five piece have this year moved from critical acclaim to becoming one of the country's most significant acts. Their influences run deep, from 18th Century poetry, 19th century painters and Alain Bashung , jazz, and indie rock, but the songs on their album sound like no one else.

Stromae takes America: Ave Cesaria in San Francisco

Another installment of Stromae's trip to the USA, with a version of Ave Cesaria from San Francisco.

The version sees Stomae accompanied by musicians on the back of a truck being driven over the Golden Gate Bridge.

Or at least it would, if they weren't pulled over by police for not wearing seatbelts.

But the concern for healt and safety didn't prevent a version of the track from Racine Carrée being performed. Although perhaps not quite in the circumstances the director had originally intended.

The work he's put in to making inroads in the US have obviously paid off, as Stromae played a sold-out show at Madison Square Gardens on October 1,  no small achievement for a Francophone act.

Stromae Takes America: Formidable in Seattle

Another installment of Stromae's adventures in the USA, with our hero taking to the stage in Seattle.

It follows a video of him performing on the streets of New York city.

The track Quand c'est is the latest track from Racine Carrée to be released as a single, it's video quite simply one of the most striking I've seen for a while.

Stromae is in mid-North American tour, with a show at Madison Square Gardens on October 1.

Although I reckon the crowd might just be a bit bigger than the one in the Seattle bar he performs in front of in in this video though...

Stromae: Quand c'est?

A new clip from Stromae, showing that there's life yet in his 2013 Racine Carrée album in terms of singles.

This time it's the song  Quand c'est ? deals with cancer, and the video tackles it with sensitivity and vision.

A bold track to begin with, and a memorable clip too, whether you need the subtitles or not.
While Racine Carrée is pretty well know in mainland Europe, with almost 2 million copies sold in France, the new clip corresponds with live dates in North America where he's becoming an increasingly well known face with high-profile admirers.

A recent video showed him performing Papaoutai in New York City, ahead of a show at  Madison Square Gardens on October 1st.

North America's a huge market, and there's certainly room for a talented artist like Stromae.

His album Racine Carrée has been an unprecedented success in Europe becoming one of the biggest selling albums in recent years. He's supported this with memorable TV appearances and extensive touring.

While he might not (yet!) have had the same level of commercial success in the USA, he's attracted the attention of some of the country's most significant artists, with the likes of Madonna and Kanye West voicing their support.

Stromae plays at Madison Square gardens on October 1st 2015 as part of a North American tour that gets under way on September 12 in Miami.

Stromae on the Jimmy Kimmell Show

 A recent high-profile appearance by the maeStro himself on TV in the USA, with Stromae performing Carmen on the Jimmy Kimmell show.

I featured the track when it emerged as a single in April, with its striking video directed by animator Sylvain Chomet.

While that would video will no doubt continue the support for the album in Europe, an appearance on the Jimmy Kimmell show would introduce him to a whole new audience.

There are of course many levels of strangeness at work here, with a Belgian rapper performing a track about the dangers of an American social media on American TV.

Hats off to whoever did the subtitles too, translating a song or a poem is not an easy task.

While Racine Carrée has conquered the market in Europe since its relase in 2013, there remains a massive potential audience in the anglophone world, and appearances like this will certainly help raise the profile of the most famous Belgian around.

Stromae and Kanye West at the Coachella festival

An appearance at the Coachella festival at the weekend saw Stromae appear with US rap megastar Kanye West.

West appeared during a performance of Alors On Danse, Stromae's first massive hit track, The song was remixed by Kanye West in 2010.

The Coachella festival in California is one of the USA's highest profile festivals and the attention from Kanye West will no doubt raise the awareness in the US of Belgium's biggest export since fantastically strong beer.

Coachella is held over two weekends, and there were also performances by French artists Yelle, Gesaffelstein and David Guetta.

Stromae has recently confirmed more live sates, this time in Africa. He'll be performing in Sénégal, Côte d'Ivoire, Gabon Cameroun, as well as  a  show in Rwanda, where his father originally came from.

The track Carmen features a video directed by  Sylvain Chomet.

Chomet's a serious director, whose work is amongst the best known French animation in recet years, including the films the Illusionist and The Triplets of Belleville (also titled Belleville Rendez-vous), a film that was nominated for two Oscars.

I'm sure the  video could be used to educate folk about social media use.

The song was co-written with rapper Orelsan.

Since Racine Carrée was release in 2013, its success has been almost unprecedented for a French language act. It has spawned three number one singles in France so far, and a number one album in most coutries in Europe as well as sales of close to two million in France.

It's sometimes hard to believe it is only Stromae's second album.

Les Victoires de la Musique 2015: Who won what

A brief look back at who won what at the Victoires de la Musique 2015 on Friday, and equally a look
back at where I thought the honours might have gone.

For all it's easy to criticise award ceremonies as glossy events that don't really reflect the reality of the music scene, they certainly give acts a platform that they might not otherwise have, and bring a massive potential audience to them.

With awards for Cascadeur and The Dø , as well as Christine and the Queens this year, it was a ceremony that saw some well-deserving acts get appropriate recognition.

Nice again to see much of the video available to watch internationally.

So seven out of twelve. A pass, including getting Best Female artist, breakthrough acts and album and Best chanson album and best video.

Stromae: Meltdown (feat Lorde, Haim, Pusha T and Q-Tip)

A high-profile new track by Stromae, with the song Meltdown featuring on the soundtrack for the
latest installment of the Hunger Games film franchise.

The track features on The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, which is released at the end of November and stars Jennifer Lawrence.

It's likely to be one of the Christmas season's biggest earning films.

The track has an impressive cast list too, with Lorde and Haim as well as Pusha T, Q-Tip featuring on the release.

Stromae takes the lead credit and the production duties for bringing the elements of the track together.

Some of the scenes of the film were, incidentally, shot in the Paris area, with filming taking place in May in Ivry-sur-Seine and in Noisy-le-Grand.

The soundtrack album also features Chvrches, Charlie XCX, Grace Jones, the Chemical Brothers as well as several tracks by Lorde who curated the collection.

Stromae comes to London on December, with a sold-out show at the Eventim Apollo on the ninth.

Stromae at Glastonbury 2014

This weekend saw the Glastonbury Festival take place in Somerset in England, probably the UK's most significant annual music event.

While the likes of headliners Kasabian, Arcade Fire and Metallica get a huge amount of exposure, there are bands playing on different stages throughout the weekend, and while there is a crowd of 135,000 at the event, the showcase nature of the event means a set at Glastonbury can mean a big step up for any act, wherever they are on the bill.

While not troubling the BBC coverage of the event,  watching it this weekend you'd be mistaken for thinking only the Black Keys, Lana Del Rey and Ellie Goulding performed, Stromae took to the stage. For many it would be their first taste of the artist who is one of the biggest in Europe at the moment, and I'm sure he left with many more admirers.

His performance comes just after Stromae unveiled a new video, this time for the track Ta fête, which has a theme that coincides well with the World Cup, albeit taking a  somewhat different take on the event.

While Racine carrée might have come out a year ago, there's still an audience to be won over by its charms, and hopefully a performance at Glastonbury will help convince an English-speaking audience of the value of music outside their linguistic comfort zone.

Stromae: Tous les Memes (Aeroplane remix)

A new version of the Stromae hit Tous les mêmes has emerged, in a  new form remixed by Belgian DJ
Aeroplane.

The original version featured on Stromae's Racine Carrée collection, probably the most successful album in France last year in both commercial and critical terms.

It was a number one single in France, its video showing Stromae at times as a woman complaining about the men in the female Stromae's life.

Stromae announced the remix by saying on Twitter "What an honor to be remixed by @VitoAeroplane"

Aeroplane, known to family and friends as Vito de Luca, has previosuly remixed the likes of Grace Jones, Friendly Fires, Cassius and We Were Evergreen.

It certainly adds a new level to the track.

This weekend saw France's most significant music awards ceremony, with the Victoires de la Musique ceremony being held for the 29th time.

The good year for Stromae continues, with the Belgian picking up three awards, and Vanessa Paradis, Phoenix, Johnny Hallyday and Woodkid picking up some new ornaments for their trophy cabinets.

It seemed a fairly obvious selection of winners. It wasn't hard to predict that Stromae might do quite well, for example.  But the list of winners doesn't really give the whole picture by any means, as there were some great performances during a programme that showcased some of the best music that France has to offer.



Among the performances were the likes of Cats on Trees, Zaz,  Etienne Daho, Indochine, Christine and the Queens and Grand Corps Malade, along with Vanessa Paradis, La Femme and Shaka Ponk.



I'm sure it's easy to criticise the list of winners, but the talent on show during the ceremony shows that French music is without a doubt in great shape and that there are acts that are not only delivering the best work of their careers at the moment and there are new acts creating some of the best work around.



In short, a great showcase for France's musical talent after what has been an historic year for French musical talent.

Stromae's Racine Carrée has been a massive hit in France this year, with the singles Formidable, Papaoutai each massive hits.

The track Tous les mêmes was more recently released as the third single from the collection.

The album was the year's biggest seller in France, and this success obviosuly did not go un-noticed in Springfield, where the man in the world's favourite yellow family has apparently recorded his own version of one of the songs

Vive le Roq's French video of the year

I've been increasingly consuming music through channels like YouTube, so I thought I'd take account of this
and give a 'best music video' award this year to a well-deserved winner.

Stromae's Formidable was without a doubt my favourite French music clip this year. And yes, I do know he's Belgian.

Like the best music videos, it's a simple idea, done perfectly. It compliments the song, and is one of those rare clips that is never forgotten once it is seen.

Stromae comes across wonderfully, as both the witty prankster and as the vulnerable human being, so convincing is his performance. But above all it makes him appear likeable.

 I wonder how it would have played out in the UK or elsewhere. Would a member of the public have helped him off the tram track? How would the police have reacted here?

With over 51million views on YouTube, a thumbs-up from Vive le roq is hardly going to make his career, but hats off to the MaeStro.

Stromae: Tous les mêmes

A new clip by Stromae is something that we're always going to mention here, on account of him being
probably this year's biggest Francophone music star and also for being an innovator with his video

Tous les mêmes is the third single from  Racine carrée, his second album, which was released earlier this year.

The previous singles, Papaoutai and Formidable were among this year's biggest sellers and the album has been at the number one position in France for over a month.

The success of the album and singles have confirmed Stromae's place as the most popular rapper in the Francophone world, and a star whose work goes beyond appealing simply to fans of the genre.

The album showed him to be an intelligent and witty commentator, as well as a fabulous entertainer.

He's been playing live extensively around France, and has more dates in the spring of 2014, including shows at the Zémith in Paris on April 9, 10 and 11. Two shows in November 2014 at Bercy in Paris have already sold out.

Belgian rapper Stromae takes to the stage in London on December 11, with a sold-out show at the Scala
venue.

The London show comes as Stromae prepares for the release of the third single from his album Racine Carrée, one of the year's biggest selling albums in France.

This time it is the song Tous les mêmes.

The new single follows Papaoutai and Formidable, both massive hit sings and both with memorable videos.
The  Belgian rapper, best known in the UK for his single Alors on danse, a massive hit around Europe and a reasonable success in Britain, has sold out the Scala for what is his debut London performance.

Friday night saw him play at the Les Rencontres Trans Musicales in Rennes, where he was probably the act that most people who attended the event wanted to see live.

He's set to play in London again in February next year, although this too has also already sold out.

Les Rencontres Trans Musicales festival

The Rencontres Trans Musicales de Rennes festival gets under way in full today, with the Breton city hostinga wide and varied selection of bands, DJs, and acts of all descriptions taking to stages in the city.

It's the 35th time the event has been held, attracting some of France's best new acts as well as others from around the world keen to showcase their acts to critics and potential fans.

A brief look back at the history of the event shows that some names that went on to become among the most significant in the music scene have played, Cabaret Voltaire, Sugarcubes, Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Portishead, Massive Attack, Daft Punk,  Röyksopp and MIA have played at the event, Meanwhile, some of the best French acts have graced the stages, with names like IAM, Zebda, Noir Désir, Mano Negra, Etienne Daho and Cassius playing.

Needless to say, Daft Punk played there in 1996, well before they became global event they have been this year.

The act that has probably attracted the most attention is Belgian rapper Stromae, playing on the Friday night. His long-awaited second album Racine Carée has been one of the most significant releases in France this year, more so even than Daft Punk, and while he's best known in the anglophone world for Alors on Danse, his album's given him some of his biggest successes yet in France.




One act I'm looking forward to is Moodoïd, who I've featured previously on this blog. Their videos are a colourful psychedelic spectacle, but as a live act Moodoïd look like they will be every bit as much of a strange and captivating sight.



There are of course, for a major international event, bands from outside the French speaking world.

One of my personal favourites here has to be Public Service Broadcasting, a UK act who take government information films and re-contextualise them in a way that makes the hair on the back of yoru neck stand up.




London Grammar have been for many the band of the year in 2013, and their most recent release is a cover of the Kavinsky track Nightcall, a French track that got a huge amount of attention when it featured in the soundtrack of the film Drive.




Of course, not every international band is a household name. Acts are on the bill more on account of their artistic reputation than their commercial success. Of course, that commercial success should hopefully follow before too long.



There are a huge number of quality French bands. Dead,a  three piece from Rennes, restore some of the strangeness and menace to electronic music.




Le Vasco deal with an equally unsettling electronic sound, a reminder that modern electronic music can still be experimental and artists working with it have ambitions beyond playing safe stadium house.




Another act with an interesting sound are Rouge Méchanique, who released their debut single in June this year, the first release on Pyramids of Mars records. Electronic music from a musician whose background includes studying classical piano and playing in rock bands in France and Italy.

I'll update the blog with brief reports throughout the weekend, there's almost so much going on that it will be impossible to cover everything, especially with even more bands playing in the pubs around the city as well.
